The history of the origins of this important event lies with the ritual called mukanda.
Here is where the secrets pertaining to the history of the ritual are given.mukanda is not just a rite of passage it is a covenant formed with the people and their ancestors.
The stories in the Mukanda relate to the nkawzi or eagle clan.

Mukanda Wa Zambi is the name of the Chokwe bible.
Zambi means God and Mukanda is the son of Zambi.
Mukanda does not only mean book it has many different meanings deppending on the context this word is used in it is also a place in fact a womb where initiates are circumcsied and taught about the spirit of mukanda.
Mul according to Mr Sitchin is the word that was used by the hebrews in relation to circumcsion.Mul according to Mr Sitchin means a celestial connection.
Chato is the chokwe word for making a mark and Nsona is the writings about the chato.Nsona is an archaic language used by the chokwe to tell the story of this mark which is given in the Mukanda ritual.
The celestial connection is a living story.
The Mukanda comes from the Kapu-Kulu the ancient old ones.Mistakenly called a bird by anthropologists who do not know the archaic meanings of many chokwe words or in fact the history of the chokwe people.
To assume that people who use symbols in relation to the word have only myths and no objective history is a grave mistake.
As to elongated heads that is how head-binding came into being, the emulation of the ancient ones for this denoted social prestige in relation to their looks.
Supposedly the Kapu-Kulu those with long heads vanished.Anybody interested in real history about the ritual of mukanda or in fact history about the spiritual significance of mukanda and the ancestors in this context the Kapu-Kulu may read the historian Credo Mutwa.
Anthropoligists are unfortunately outside of the culture of mukanda and therfore rely on interpretations which ends up as misrepresentation. When trying to gain knowledge about other cultures refer to material from people who belong to the culture and not to brief visitors among people of culture.
The history of the circumcsion ceremony is unfortunately known only to those who are initiated into the celestial connection.
Because this history is revealed and not explaned it has been turned into a myth. The only relevant question to ask is what is myth and what is history.

So the era is "present."

But who are the Chokwe? Where are they? Africa? Asia? Australia?

What is the source of your information?

Dear Agnostic.

Gnosis is defined as as recognition or knowledge, possesing knowledge ,especially esotoric, spiritual knowledge.
Gnostisism is a religious movement characterised by a belief in Gnosis.
For mukanda going people there is a spirit world.
The doctrine which reveals but does not explain this spirit world implies the need to have knowledge of the spirit.
It seems that the philosophy or doctrine cannot be abstracted and therfore i suppose this is one of the resons so little is known or written about the history of the mukanda.
The subject matter is rather difficult in itself and therfore i will be leaving this posting.
My appoliges for any inconveniences misrepresentations or misunderstandings.
